When discussing tears stains with anyone you can bet the top three solutions will be to use some type of filtered water.  I have county water with no filter which is what I drink and cook with and give to all my Maltese.  For the last two years approximately I put a Water Ionizer on the water supply which was to reduce the acid and create an Alkaline purified water.  I had this unit on hand because I had breast cancer in 2008 and purchased this unit because of the benefits of Alkaline Ionized water.  Alkaline water is an antioxidant and is very alkalizing, hydrating and detoxifying.  I had it in my home most of the time and then decided I would drink water from the refrigerator when at the house since it has a filter and move the system to the kennel to filter their water.  Over the last 2 years I have not noticed any reduction in eye staining with my fur babies.

I decided to take it a step further and get a Reverse Osmosis Water System for the kennel water.  I had it installed November 2018 and am really hoping to see a difference since I feel this is probably more of  filtration system than the above ionizer was.

It uses the household water pressure to force water through three filters. Minerals and impurities are filtered out. Delicious tasting drinking water goes to the storage tank-ready for use.

Pre-filter: Water from the cold supply pipe enters the pre-filter which is a replaceable sediment  cartridge with activated carbon in its composition. The cartridge reduces taste, odor, sand, silt, dirt and other sediments and some chlorine.

Reverse Osmosis Cartridge: Filtered water flows from the pre-filter to the Reverse Osmosis membrane cartridge. The RO cartridge is a tightly wound special membrane. It reduces the dissolved solids and organic matter and high quality water exits the RO cartridge which flows tot he storage tank, post filter and to the RO faucet. The drain water with the dissolved solids and organic matter is routed to the drank.

Post-filter: Water goes through the post-filter before going to the RO faucet. The post filter is an activated carbon type filter. Any remaining tastes and odors are reduced from the product water ending with clean, high quality drinking water.

All that sounds great now let’s see what kind of results I get.  I am sure it can’t hurt us but most importantly, will it be the key to reducing eye stain?

I can not say that I have seen any difference whatsoever since installing the reverse osmosis water system.  This month I purchased 2 Brita water filter canisters and I am going to provide all water through this filtered system and track any differences that I find in my Maltese.
